American grinder Will ‘The Thrill’ Failla turned ten years’ worth of effort into $758,085 this week after claiming his first WPT in a long and sometimes frustrating career.

This position is nothing new for Failla, who is the all-time leader in BPO titles and is in the hunt for his first Championship title since winning the 2015 Summer Poker Open Main Event.

Despite clocking up just over $2 million in career earnings, Failla had never won a major championship prior to this week’s WPT Legends of Poker in Los Angeles.

The Thrill came into the $3,500 + $200 event off the back of some solid form at this year’s WSOP, cashing five times for a little over $100,000. And he saw off a stacked field, which included former Main Event winners Phil Hellmuth and J.C Tran, to bag the career best cash.

Failla came into the final table clutching the chip lead, and despite a few early wobbles, held on to see off Ken Aldridge heads-up. After busting Aldrige’s Aces with a rivered flush in the penultimate hand, Failla got his hands on the trophy when his J-6 held over Aldrige’s 4-6.

The board paired on the turn, giving Failla a full house, while his opponent was holding pocket kings. A king on the river gave his opponent a higher full house and Failla was eliminated after calling off all of his chips when the last card was drawn.
